Automatic Transmission Diagnostics

Automatic transmission problems rarely appear without warning. Delayed shifting, harsh gear changes, warning lights, slipping gears, or unusual noises are all signs that something inside the transmission system is not working as it should.

At Central Gear Transmissions, our automatic transmission diagnostics service is designed to identify faults early and accurately, before they turn into expensive gearbox failures.

Our diagnostics service is designed to cover every critical area that affects automatic gearbox performance.

Our workshop is equipped to diagnose automatic transmissions across a wide range of vehicles, including BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Ford. Whether your car is throwing a warning light or simply not driving the way it should, our technicians have the tools and the experience to give you a clear, honest answer.

What Automatic Transmission Diagnostics Actually Covers

At Central Gear Transmissions, our automatic transmission diagnostic process goes beyond plugging in a code reader. We connect to your vehicle’s transmission control unit to read live data as the system operates, allowing us to see how solenoids, clutch packs, and hydraulic circuits are behaving in real conditions. This gives us a far more accurate picture of the fault and avoids the risk of replacing parts that are not the cause of the problem.

1

Diagnostic Scanning and Data Analysis

We work across a broad range of makes, so whether you drive a Volkswagen DSG, a Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic, or a Ford PowerShift, our equipment can communicate with your system accurately to reads stored fault codes and live operating data from the transmission control module.
2

Physical and Fluid Inspection

Alongside the electronic diagnostic, our technicians carry out a physical inspection of the transmission, checking fluid condition, pan integrity, and any visible mechanical signs of wear or damage. Degraded fluid, metal contamination, or incorrect fluid type are common contributors to automatic gearbox faults that a scanner alone will not flag.
How We Approach the Diagnosis

Central Gear Transmissions has built its reputation on transparency. Our Wolverhampton workshop handles everything from minor sensor faults to full transmission rebuilds, and a reliable diagnostic is the foundation every repair starts from.

Expert Diagnostic Technicians

Our team has hands-on experience with a wide range of automatic transmission systems, from traditional four-speed units to modern dual-clutch and CVT designs. We approach your vehicle's problem without assumptions, following the data rather than guessing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

Questions Mostly Asked By Our Customer

Q1. How long will my car be off the road?

In most cases, the diagnostic process itself takes between one and two hours. Depending on the nature of the fault found, we will then advise whether your vehicle can be driven away or whether further work is needed. We will always be upfront with you before any repair begins.

Q2. Do you offer a warranty on diagnostic work?

Yes. Our diagnostic report reflects our findings at the time of inspection and is backed by our commitment to accuracy. If a repair is carried out based on our findings and the fault persists, we will re-examine the vehicle at no additional diagnostic charge.

Q3. Can you programme the gearbox after a repair?

Yes. Central Gear Transmissions has the equipment to carry out transmission control unit programming and adaptation resets where required after a repair. This is particularly important for vehicles that have had a valve body, mechatronic unit, or TCU replaced, as programming ensures the new component communicates correctly with the rest of the vehicle.

Q4. What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major debit and credit cards, as well as bank transfer. Payment is taken on completion of work. We do not require upfront payment for diagnostic appointments.

Q5. My gearbox warning light has come on but the car is driving fine. Do I still need a diagnostic?

Yes, and we would strongly recommend not ignoring it. Warning lights often illuminate before a fault becomes serious enough to affect driving. Catching the issue at this stage is almost always less expensive than waiting until the gearbox begins to slip, jolt, or fail completely. A diagnostic gives you the information you need to make the right decision.

We diagnose and repair automatic transmissions for a wide range of vehicles, including BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and Volkswagen. Whether you are dealing with a warning light, a slipping gearbox, or a car that has simply stopped engaging gears, our diagnostic process is designed to find the real cause quickly, clearly, and without unnecessary expense.
